- Food for the whole trip (plus extra), and bowls
- Water and a travel bowl
- Medications and a copy of your dog's vaccine records
- Leash, harness, collar with ID tag, and poop bags
- Bed or blanket that smells like home
- A few favorite toys and chews
- Towels and wipes for muddy paws
- A basic pet first-aid kit
- A recent photo of your dog, in case you get separated
Road trip tips
- Use a crash-tested crate or car harness. Loose dogs can be hurt in sudden stops.
- Stop every 2 to 3 hours for water and a potty break.
- Never leave your dog in a parked car. Cars heat up very fast, even on mild days.
- Feed a light meal a few hours before driving to reduce car sickness.
Hotels and rentals
- Confirm the pet policy, size limits and fees before you book.
- Bring your dog's bed and keep the routine as normal as possible.
- Look up the nearest emergency vet at your destination ahead of time.
